Anthony S. is another satisfied customer of UCP’s Changing Hands equipment reuse service, and for good reason. The equipment he received restored his mobility and enabled him to carry on with his life. As the effects of Muscular Dystrophy have taken their toll, Anthony found himself without the muscle strength or stamina to navigate a manual wheelchair. Even worse, in the midst of COVID, he faced the uphill challenge of finding someone to assist him in his search for a power chair. He consulted with his physician who wrote a script for him to get approval for funding through insurance, but the request appears to have stalled. Another service provider said they could get him a chair, but it would take about three months’ time. With Anthony basically being stuck immobile at home, that was three months he couldn’t afford to wait. It was suggested to him that he check out local lending closets, so he Googled “equipment loan closet near me.” The first name that appeared on the list of search results was Changing Hands. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Anthony described the experience of working with Changing Hands as “easy peasy.” He couldn’t believe how simple and speedy the process was for him. In fact, the only thing he had to do was find a way to collect and transport the chair back home. So he called a friend who was able to help him out. Within just a few days of reaching out to Changing Hands, Anthony had his own chair… and it didn’t cost him anything. Later that same he day, he expressed his gratitude in a message he left on the Changing Hands voicemail: “I’m just calling to thank you again for the chair… and also for pretty much saving my life. I appreciate it more than you know.”
