It has been a year. March 13, 2021 marks one year since the world as we knew it began to change forever. Schools across the state—indeed the nation—sent their students home that Friday the 13th with a hopeful message: “see you in two weeks.” Businesses soon followed suit, based on the official guidance at the time that we needed “15 days to slow the spread.” So it bears repeating… it has been a year.

Still, today, rather than look back, I want to look ahead. Spring is just around the corner and I’m hopeful that a return to something more closely approximating life as we knew it is not far off. March 5th was National Employee Appreciation day. Coming as it did at the end of an especially challenging year—physically, mentally, and emotionally—for folks who do what we do, it presented an opportune time to recognize, acknowledge, and THANK all UCP employees for their tireless efforts on behalf of the people we support.

Our journey together over the last year has only enhanced my appreciation for each and every one of our team members. They bring their best every day and for that I appreciate them more than I can express, not just on a single day set aside for that purpose… but EVERY DAY.

Because of their efforts and their heart UCP has been able to continue to support the people who count on us most. We will stay the course through 2021 and beyond, precisely because our staff live out our mission every day. They:

  • Show up to provide direct services–or support those providing the direct services.
  • Are nimble and willing to be flexible with ongoing changes—in protocols, processes, and even service delivery–that have resulted from the ongoing pandemic.
  • Put their own fears and reservations aside to help keep our participants safe and engaged.
  • Are willing to share their creative, innovative ideas of how we can best overcome obstacles that may get in our way.
  • Let their care and compassion shine through even on the most difficult days.
  • Support their co-workers who may face personal challenges with the modified work arrangements.

Looking forward, I couldn’t be more grateful—or feel more blessed–that these people are part of UCP’s One Team. One Mission.
